  1. Professor N Kumar, Vice-Chancellor of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) was conferred with ‘Lifetime Recognition Award’ by the Confederation of Horticulture Association of India (CHAI). He was awarded for his contributions to the field of horticulture and academic leadership focused on human resource development in agriculture.It was presented to him at the International Conference on Innovative horticulture held at Pantnagar, Uttarakhand.
  2. The opening match of the ICC World Cup 2019 was held on May 30, 2019, between host country England and South Africa at the Kennington Oval, London.
  3. International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers was celebrated on May 29. This day was adopted by the UN General Assembly in its resolution 57/129. The theme for this year’ is “Protecting Civilians, Protecting Peace”. The day was first celebrated on May 29, 1948 to pay tribute to the 3700 uniformed and civil personnel who lost their lives upholding peace.
  4. The Armed Forces Tribunal cleared the way for Vice Admiral Karambir Singh to become the next Navy Chief, while it deferred for four weeks the matter of Vice Admiral Bimal Verma which seeks to quash Singh’s appointment. Karambir Singh, who is the Commander-in-Chief of the Eastern Naval Command, will take over as the Navy Chief on 31st May 2019.
  5. RBI has constituted a six-member committee on the Development of Secondary Market for Corporate Loans to come up with recommendations to increase the efficiencies of the debt market and aid in the resolution of stressed assets. The committee, headed by TN Manoharan, Chairman, Canara Bank, will make recommendations on required policy/regulatory interventions for facilitating the development of the secondary market in corporate loans, including loan transaction platform for stressed assets.
  6. International Everest Day is being observed on 29th May. Nepalese Tenzing Norgay and New Zealand’s Edmund Hillary had climbed the Mt. Everest on this day (29th May) in 1953, as the first humans to achieve the feat. Nepal decided to observe the day as International Everest Day since 2008 when the legendary climber Hillary passed away. Everest Day on May 29 every year in memory of the first summit of Mt. Everest by Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay Sherpa on the day in 1953. The day is celebrated with memorial events, processions, and special events in Kathmandu and the Everest region.
  7. The National Small Industries Corporation Limited (NSIC) inked Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) for the year 2019-20 to provide enhanced services. The MoU was signed in the presence of National Small Industries Corporation (NSIC) Chairman-cum-Managing Director (CMD); Additional Secretary of MSME, Ram Mohan Mishra and MSME Secretary Arun Kumar Panda. It aimed at enhanced services by NSIC under its marketing, financial, technology and other support services schemes for MSMEs in the country.
  8. Former American professional basketball player, Lamar Odom, aged 39, launched a new book titled ‘Darkness to light’. The book reveals the dark secrets of his life. He is the ex-husband of Khloe Kardashian, an American media personality, socialite, model, businesswoman and entrepreneur. In his book, he has opened up about his relationship with ex-wife Khloe Kardashian, his difficult childhood, past overdoses and addictions to drugs, alcohol, and sex. As a member of the Los Angeles Lakers in the National Basketball Association (NBA), he won NBA championships in 2009 and 2010 and was named the NBA Sixth Man of the Year in 2011.
  9. Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) launched a data platform called Integrated Database on Infrastructure Projects (IDIP) on 29th May. IDIP is aimed at enhancing the efficiency of infrastructure development in India and to enable effective decision-making among different stakeholders involved in the infrastructure sector.
  10. India signs Loan Agreement with the World Bank for Strengthening the Public Financial Management in Rajasthan Project. The objective is to improve Budget execution, enhanced accountability and greater efficiency in Revenue Administration in Rajasthan. Project size is USD 31 million, USD 21.7 million will be financed by the World Bank& USD 9.3 million by State Budget. Tenure -5 years.
  11. The 9th annual World Hunger Day was observed on May 28, 2019, with a theme of “#SustainabilityIs”. World Hunger Day is an initiative by The Hunger Project, first started in 2011. The objective is to raise awareness about more than 821 million people living in chronic hunger worldwide. It seeks to celebrate sustainable solutions to hunger and poverty and to inspire everyone to be a part of the solution. The Hunger project used an innovative, holistic approach that tackles all the issues of poverty and hunger and also empowers those people who are living in hunger so that they can become the agents of their own development and lift their communities above the poverty line.

Chief of the Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Birender Singh Dhanoa received the baton of Chairman, Chiefs of Staff Committee from outgoing Chairman COSC and Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Sunil Lanba, Air Chief Marshal Birender Singh Dhanoa will be the Chairman COSC with effect from May 31, 2019, consequent to relinquishment of charge by Admiral Sunil Lanba upon superannuation. Air Chief Marshal Birender Singh Dhanoa, an alumnus of Rashtriya Indian Military College and the National Defence Academy, was commissioned in the Flying Branch of Indian Air Force in June 1978. He is an experienced fighter pilot and a qualified CAT ‘A’ Flying Instructor with over 3000 hours of flying experience to his credit. The Air Chief Marshal has mainly flown the MiG-21 aircraft with flying experience across the entire spectrum of fighter aircraft of the Indian Air Force.
  13. Researchers from the University of Chicago, have discovered the remnants of seawater of the Ice Age from the rock formations in the middle of the Indian Ocean while exploring the limestone deposits that form the Maldives. It was published in the Journal Geochimica et Cosmochimica Acta.They were found using the ship JOIDES Resolution.The seawater from the ice age is back salty- much saltier than the normal water. It was found to be 20,000 years older.Scientists are interested in reconstructing the last Ice Age because the patterns that drove its circulation, climate and weather are different. Understanding these will help to know how the planet’s climate will react in the future.
  14. Nepal is celebrating its 12th Republic Day on 29th May 2019. A number of programmes are being organized in different parts of the country to mark the occasion. The main function was held at Army Pavilion in Kathmandu, which was attended by the President Bidya Devi Bhandari, Prime Minister K.P.Sharma Oli, cabinet ministers, senior government officials, heads and representatives of various diplomatic missions and other dignitaries.
  15. Western Command Children Summer Adventure Camp 2019 is being organised at Manali from 27 May to 02 June 2019. The seven day camp is being conducted under the aegis of Rising Star Brigade. This camp aims to provide a wholesome outdoor exposure to young boys and girls through educational, recreational and adventure activities.
  16. Kerala will levy a 1% cess on most goods and services in the state from 1 June to raise funds to rebuild the state from the devastation wreaked by last year’s floods.
  17. Y S Jaganmohan Reddy, who got a massive mandate for his party YSRCP in the Assembly elections, was sworn in as second Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh after bifurcation on 30 May. Governor E.S.L. Narasimhan administered the oath to Mr. Jagan at the Indira Gandhi Municipal Stadium, Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh. In his first major announcement after taking the oath, Reddy immediately announced Rs.3,000 as pension per month for senior citizens in the state. The scheme would begin with Rs 2,250 and it will be increased up to Rs 3,000 within three years. He asserted there would be corruption-free governance in the state. A call centre would be set up at the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) to address the corruption charges. Everyone will have access to the CMO.

Comoros has ratified International Solar Alliance (ISA) treaty in the year 2017.
